Week 0 – Laying a Strong Foundation

I’ve given myself a 5 – 6 months of daily opportunity to surf to reach the level of surfing where I can safely and confidently get barrelled. To the uninitiated, such an amount of time may seem excessive, but surfers with a respectable amount of time in the water may even doubt if such an amount of time is sufficient to reach my goals.

Given my time constraints, effectiveness and maximum progression rates are crucial in my surfing journey. So, I found it necessary to attend a surf camp to accelerate the learning process. Having attended 3-4 surf camps in Sri Lanka, Bali and Philippines, I found the teaching quality lacklustre and didn’t effectively improve progression. Mainly because these camps lacked any formal teaching structure and also because the ability to communicate the finer intricacies of surfing is a rare skill, especially amongst surfers who spend most of their time chasing waves, as opposed to learning in the classroom,

Fortunately, through the word of mouth of some Singaporean surfers in Sri Lanka, I was recommended a surf camp in Indonesia that addressed my common complaints about most surf camps. Surf Camp Lombok, located in Kampung Gerupuk on Lombok island, is probably the most progression-focused surf camp in my experience. With formal theory classes for beginners and an intermediate-level “Sessions” program with photo review by an experienced surf coach, SCL wasn’t just an excuse to party or drink, but it was a serious surf camp genuinely aimed at improving its participants’ surf skills.

And so I decided to lay a strong foundation at the beginning of my journey right here. Although I had sat through the beginner’s theory classes before, I decided to re-start at the beginner level for a refresher of basic surf knowledge and it definitely was the right decision. From understanding the line-up to efficient paddling technique, the beginner’s camp undoubtedly put me on the right footing.

A 29 year old dude trying to fulfil a life long dream of getting barreled. I'm passionate about rock climbing, mountaineering, ski touring and salsa and bachata too. Least importantly, I'm an engineer taking a break from my MSc at ETH Zurich in Energy Science and Technology to chase the waves for awhile. If you would like, follow me on my instagram @OhMyChwow
