Week 2 – Consistent Pop Ups and Bottom Turns

After my physical conditioning was completed, I could start focusing my attention to the next level of progression: pop ups and bottom turns.

Before starting this surf trip, I could do pop ups and bottoms turns, albeit inconsistently. Through SCL’s technical breakdown of both fundamental surf movements, I was able to pinpoint certain repeated mistakes I was making, i.e. Not keeping both hands over each side of the rail, as a source of failing to pop-up and bottom turn correctly.

One of my better bottom turns. Looking up the wave face, hands touching the water, with trailing arm staying on the trailing rail of the board.

I also started to attempt top turns in this week, although they were more like pivots, rather than real ‘engage the rail’ turns. Nonetheless, this represented progress.

There were several waves in which I successfully completed faux cutbacks, in the sense that I changed my line along the wave, from bottom of the face to the top, then accelerating down again. Although I doubt they looked good at all :/
